Burnout and Work Stress Treatment
Burnout isn't laziness or weakness — it's what happens when chronic work stress exceeds your capacity to recover. Our psychiatrists evaluate whether burnout exists alongside depression, anxiety, or other treatable conditions, and develop a plan that actually helps.

Understanding Burnout and Work Stress
Feeling Exhausted, Detached, or Running on Empty?
Same-week appointments available. If work stress has crossed the line from manageable to overwhelming — affecting your sleep, mood, relationships, or health — a psychiatric evaluation can help determine what's going on and what to do about it.
If you are in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm, please call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately.
Burnout is more than "being stressed." It's a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion that develops when workplace demands consistently exceed your capacity to cope. The World Health Organization defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon characterized by three dimensions: energy depletion or exhaustion, increased mental distance from one's job (cynicism or negativity), and reduced professional efficacy.
What makes burnout clinically important is that it frequently overlaps with — or triggers — treatable mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Many people experiencing burnout are actually experiencing a combination of burnout and a clinical condition that needs treatment, not just a vacation.
At Empathy Health Clinic, our board-certified psychiatrists evaluate the full picture. We don't just tell you to "take a break" — we assess whether burnout exists alongside depression, anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, or other conditions, and develop a treatment plan that addresses the clinical components while acknowledging the occupational ones.
This matters because burnout alone may respond to structural and lifestyle changes, while co-occurring depression or anxiety typically requires clinical treatment — and treating one without identifying the other leads to incomplete recovery.

What We Evaluate and Treat
Burnout rarely exists in isolation — accurate diagnosis drives effective treatment
Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation
A thorough assessment of your symptoms, functional impact, work situation, medical history, and mental health history. The key question we answer is: is this burnout alone, or is burnout coexisting with depression, anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, or another treatable condition? This distinction drives the entire treatment plan.
Depression Screening & Treatment
Burnout and depression share many symptoms — fatigue, loss of motivation, difficulty concentrating, emotional numbness. When depression is present alongside burnout, lifestyle changes alone aren't enough. We evaluate for depression and, when indicated, provide medication management with SSRIs, SNRIs, or other evidence-based options.
Anxiety Evaluation & Management
Chronic work stress can trigger or worsen anxiety disorders — including generalized anxiety, panic symptoms, and high-functioning anxiety. We evaluate whether anxiety is contributing to or resulting from burnout, and offer safe, non-addictive treatment options.
Sleep Assessment
Sleep disruption is both a symptom and a driver of burnout. The cycle of poor sleep → impaired performance → increased stress → worse sleep is common in burned-out professionals. We evaluate sleep patterns and, when needed, treat insomnia as part of the broader plan.
ADHD Screening
Undiagnosed ADHD is a hidden contributor to burnout — the constant effort of compensating for attention, organization, and time-management difficulties can be exhausting. We screen for ADHD when burnout symptoms don't fully explain the clinical picture.
Therapy Coordination & Practical Strategies
Medication addresses the clinical components of burnout, but recovery also benefits from therapy (CBT, stress management), boundary-setting, and structural changes. We coordinate with therapists and discuss realistic, individualized strategies — not generic self-care advice.

The Three Dimensions of Burnout
The WHO defines burnout through three interconnected dimensions. Most people experience all three to varying degrees.
Exhaustion
Physical and emotional depletion that doesn't resolve with normal rest. Feeling drained before the workday even begins. Weekends and vacations no longer feel restorative.
Cynicism & Detachment
Increased mental distance from your job. Feeling negative, cynical, or indifferent toward work that once felt meaningful. Going through the motions. Reduced empathy for colleagues or clients.
Reduced Effectiveness
Declining performance despite effort. Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or completing tasks that used to feel manageable. Questioning your competence.
Burnout, Depression, or Anxiety? Why It Matters
| Burnout | Depression | Anxiety | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary trigger | Work/occupational demands | Multiple factors (biological, psychological, situational) | Perceived threats/uncertainty |
| Scope | Primarily work-related | Affects all areas of life | May be generalized or specific |
| Key emotion | Cynicism, detachment | Hopelessness, emptiness | Worry, fear, dread |
| Improves with rest? | Sometimes (if early stage) | Usually not | Usually not |
| Typical treatment | Structural changes + clinical care if co-occurring | Medication + therapy | Medication + therapy (CBT) |
Many people experience burnout, depression, and anxiety simultaneously. A psychiatric evaluation helps identify all contributing factors.
Professions at Higher Risk for Burnout
Burnout affects people across all industries, but certain professions carry higher risk due to sustained emotional demands, high stakes, or limited autonomy.

You Can't Push Through Forever
Burnout doesn't resolve on its own — especially when depression, anxiety, or other conditions are part of the picture. Our psychiatrists help you identify what's really going on and build a path to recovery.
