Mental health care in Orlando is delivered by several different kinds of licensed clinicians, and the right starting point depends on what you are looking for. Below is a plain-English guide to who does what at Empathy Health Clinic, so you can request the provider who fits your needs at our Winter Park office or by telehealth.
Psychiatrists (MD / DO)
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who complete four years of medical school followed by a psychiatry residency. They diagnose mental health conditions, rule out medical causes of symptoms, and prescribe and monitor medication. See a psychiatrist if you want a diagnostic evaluation, if previous medications have not worked, or if your symptoms are complex or overlapping. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP-BC)
Board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners hold graduate nursing degrees with specialized psychiatric training. In Florida they evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe, and they often have earlier availability than physician schedules. Many of our patients see a PMHNP for follow-up visits and medication adjustments while remaining part of the same care team.
Licensed Therapists and Counselors
Our licensed clinical social workers and mental health counselors provide talk therapy rather than medication. They use structured, evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and exposure and response prevention (ERP). Therapy is often most effective when paired with psychiatric care. You can meet our Orlando therapists or start with therapy near you.
How to Choose the Right Provider
If you are not sure where to begin, start with a psychiatric evaluation. It is a conversation-based appointment in which a provider reviews your history, current symptoms, sleep, stressors, and any past treatment, then recommends a plan. That plan may involve medication, therapy, or both, and it can be adjusted as you go. You do not need a referral to book with us, though some insurance plans require one for coverage.
Every provider on our team treats adults across Orlando, Winter Park, Maitland, and the surrounding Central Florida communities, in person or through secure video visits. If a provider is not the right fit, we will help you transfer within the practice so you keep your records and your place in the schedule.
