What Does a Comprehensive Depression Evaluation Include?
A depression evaluation is not your primary care doctor asking 'Have you been feeling down?' and handing you a prescription. It is a structured clinical assessment that determines exactly what type of depression you have, how severe it is, whether other conditions are contributing, and which treatment approach is most likely to work for your specific situation.
This distinction matters more than most people realize. Bipolar depression looks identical to unipolar depression on the surface, but prescribing a standard antidepressant to someone with bipolar depression can trigger a manic episode. Treatment-resistant depression may require augmentation strategies that differ from first-line approaches. Depression with co-occurring anxiety, ADHD, or trauma requires integrated treatment. Getting the diagnosis right is not academic — it determines whether treatment helps or makes things worse.
Many adults seeking a depression evaluation have been struggling for months or years. Some have tried medication prescribed by their primary care doctor without improvement. Others have been white-knuckling through each day, telling themselves they should be able to handle it. Still others have noticed that their relationships, career, and health are deteriorating but cannot pinpoint why. A comprehensive evaluation provides clarity — and clarity is the first step toward recovery.
We offer both in-person evaluations at our Winter Park office and telehealth evaluations for patients anywhere in Florida. Same-week appointments are typically available, and most major insurance plans are accepted.

Untreated ADHD can cause or worsen depressive symptoms
Hypothyroidism closely mimics depression
B12, D, and iron deficiency can cause depressive symptoms
Alcohol and drug use frequently co-occurs with depression
Our Depression Evaluation Process — Step by Step
Pre-Visit Screening & Questionnaires
Before your appointment, you complete the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and bipolar screening instruments along with a detailed intake form covering your symptom timeline, previous treatments, family psychiatric history, and current life stressors.
Clinical Interview & Mental Status Exam
Your psychiatrist conducts a structured 45-to-60-minute interview exploring the nature, onset, and duration of your symptoms, functional impairment in work, relationships, and self-care, sleep and appetite patterns, energy levels, concentration, and any thoughts of self-harm.
Differential Diagnosis & Medical Rule-Outs
We differentiate between depression subtypes (unipolar vs. bipolar vs. persistent) and screen for medical conditions that mimic depression — hypothyroidism, anemia, vitamin D deficiency, sleep apnea, and medication side effects. Misdiagnosis at this stage leads to months of ineffective treatment.
Diagnosis, Treatment Plan & Next Steps
You leave with a clear diagnosis, a personalized treatment plan specifying medication type and dosage (if appropriate), therapy recommendations, lifestyle modifications, and a follow-up schedule. If medication is prescribed, it is sent to your pharmacy the same day.

Our psychiatric depression evaluation is completed in a single appointment. You leave with a diagnosis, a treatment plan, and — if needed — a prescription. No referral chains, no multi-week testing, no second appointment just to hear results.
We Take Depression Seriously — Even When Others Have Not
If you have been told to 'snap out of it,' 'stay positive,' or 'just exercise more,' you know how demoralizing it is to have your suffering minimized. Our team understands that depression is a medical condition that deserves medical treatment. You will be heard, believed, and helped.
